Mamounia Lounge

A few weekends back, I decided to revisit Mamounia Lounge in Knightsbridge with a close friend of mine. We wanted a really nice relaxed evening with good food, and as I previously had enjoyed eating at the restaurant I thought it would be nice to take my friend there. I’ve been meaning to share restaurant/food experiences with you all as I personally love reading those kind of posts, so I thought it was about time I created some of mine.

It was a really nice breezy summer evening, so I opted for an all-white outfit, bar the heels. The restaurant itself was full of ambience and character, teeming with people and a live DJ so the atmosphere was really lively and pleasant. I asked to sit at the back, which is a little section right by the kitchen which is much quieter than the front. If you wanted a little bit of quietness away from the crowd, I would recommend asking for a seat there if the section is open. The décor is gorgeous, with plush seats and huge cushions and rose petals scattered on the table.

After I refreshed myself with a Strawberry Mojito mocktail (which I highly recommend) we set about ordering the starters. We opted for Jawaneh, which is chargrilled chicken wings marinated with paprika, oregano and lemon juice. It was nice, but mediocre so next time I think I will opt for something different as I think I was playing it a little safe. However the second starter of Merguze was mouth wateringly delicious. It is grilled traditional Moroccan lamb sausage filled with spices, red pepper and garlic and it was so tasty and delicious. It is served with bread and a cold aubergine mezze which itself was rather heavenly and we wiped the plate clean with the bread.

For mains I knew what I wanted, a really good tagine, in a traditional tagine dish. I love tagines as the meat tends to be really well cooked and tender, and the sauce very flavoursome but unfortunately it is quite hard to get hold of locally for me. I opted for the Chicken Tagine which is described as: Half Chicken marinated in a Lemon, Onion, Olive and Saffron Sauce Served with Saffron Potatoes, preserved Lemon and Olives. How good does that sound? It came steaming and bubbling and satisfied my craving perfectly. My friend went for the Meshoui, which is a shoulder of lamb which has been slowly roasted for 8 hours. As you can imagine the meat was so tender and soft and we both thoroughly enjoyed our mains. We also got a side Mamounia Special Rice which was a perfect compliment to both our meals. Feeling too stuffed from the food (neither of us have huge appetites), we decided to split a dessert although I’ll admit it was me that polished most of it off. I chose a Chocolate Fondant, a rich chocolate cake with a gooey melted chocolate centre, it was perfect with just the right amount of cake and melted chocolate ratio.

Overall we both loved our experience at this restaurant, and as we went on a Saturday evening there was a DJ at the restaurant and a belly dancer twirled around diners later in the evening which made us feel like we were transported to somewhere abroad for a little while. The service was great and attentive, the food delicious and we both definitely want to return. I know that there is a Mamounia Lounge branch in Mayfair but I might just stick to this one, why fix something that isn’t broke? I hope you liked my Mamounia Lounge review, let me know if you would like to see more. Now that I have got my Sony A5100 [blog post here], I won’t need to lug my huge DSLR to restaurants so hopefully it will now be easier to snap pics. Speak soon, Tanzina x

Afternoon Tea at Patisserie Valerie for £19!

Morning loves, today I have a little bit of a different post for you, instead of beauty I am talking food/lifestyle. Last weekend I went for Afternoon Tea at Patisserie Valerie with my best friend (hi Yasmin) and I thought I would share it with you. It was an amazing deal so  I took a few snaps for you all just so you can see what it entails.

Afternoon tea is a really popular British custom, however it can get quite pricey ranging from £20+ per person. When I stumbled across an afternoon tea at Patisserie Valerie deal, I knew I had to snap it up. It seemed a little bit too good to be true as there was so much for just £19, but I decided to go for it regardless as I really like Patesserie Valerie. The deal entails: ‘A selection of ten finger sandwiches, two quiches, four scones with jam and cream, two mini cakes slices, two mini cakes, two chocolate éclairs and a refillable pot of tea/coffee.’

However there definitely is a little bit of a catch, the quiche and cakes were a lot smaller than I expected. I have to admit I let my imagination run with me a little, I expected huge slices of quiche and a full sized chocolate eclair and I was a little surprised at the mini sizes. That being said, there is more than enough food for two people and we didn’t even manage to finish it all between the two of us. The sandwiches were nice and fresh, and we had enough nibbles to go along with our conversation.

Afternoon Tea at Patisserie Valerie

Although it isn’t a posh high tea afternoon tea experience, this is nevertheless a really good deal. We did a bit of shopping on Oxford St/Caranaby St in London and popped in to Patisserie Valerie to quench our thirst. With cups of tea going for almost £5 around Central London, all this food for £9.50 each was a steal. It is a really nice experience as well, a chance to catch up over something both visually and actually appetising.

Overall I think it was a really good experience, something nice and relaxing that doesn’t break the bank too much. If you are looking for a really fancy Afternoon Tea experience, this definitely isn’t the deal for you. However if you are looking for somewhere to relax and catch up after a shopping session or something similar, I would highly recommend giving this deal a go.

You can pick up for your deal for £19 here. It is valid pretty much nationwide bar a handful of locations.

I hope you liked today’s post, it is a little bit different to the usual beauty babble but I thought I would share it with you all as I can imagine it being of interest to quite a few people. If you do go along, let me know what you think of the experience. If you have any questions, feel free to pop them below. Tanzina x

Red Iron Burgers Review

Today is a different sort of post from me, one I’m surprised it has taken so long for me to pen. Some of you may already know if you follow me on social media I do tend to eat out quite a lot. I’m always asking people for recommendations, reading TripAdvisor reviews, looking through blog posts to find the next best place to eat. This isn’t easy for me, as we have to factor in the fact that if I’m going to eat meat it has to be halal. I’m not too fussed if I go down the veggie/fish route but halal meat is always a bonus. So today I’ve decided I’m going to start doing food reviews, and add a little flavour to my post. The first restaurant I’ve chosen to review is a raved about halal burger joint – Red Iron Burgers.

I’m always looking for new places to eat so when at work a colleague recommended Red Iron Burgers, and I saw the menu, I knew it was a place I needed to visit. The travelling time from my area to Uxbridge where Red Iron Burgers is located is about a 45 minute – 1 hour drive which I was more than happy to take to experience this restaurant that everyone seemed to rave about. I was dining with my friend so after some ridiculous traffic we finally arrived and we couldn’t wait to get stuck into a juicy big burger. Even though there was steak on the menu, I decided we had to sample the burgers first – we could leave the rest of the menu for another visit. Now neither of us have what I would call huge appetite so we decided to share a starter. I love chicken wings, spicy wings in particular so I decided to order one portion of Buffalo Chicken Wings. It came beautifully coated in a hot tangy sauce that makes you dribble a little once it hits your taste buds. The chicken was so well cooked, not over done and so tender. I would definitely say the wings were up there with some of the best wings I’ve ever had, if you do visit the restaurant, you must try these!

Now onto the star attraction – the burgers. I decided to opt for the signature Red Iron Burger which was said to be ‘oozing layers of mixed cheeses, house Red Iron Burger sauce, garlic mayo, caramelised red onions, jalapenos, fresh red onion, lettuce and tomato‘. My friend decided to play it safe and went for a traditional cheese burger with cheddar cheese and extra gherkins. I love how you have the option of choosing your cheeses, an option no other burger place I have visited has ever given me. All the burger meals come with chips, and it isn’t just any ordinary chips instead it is rustic french fries style chips which just tasted so good. Let’s talk about the burger, we both liked our burgers initially, the buns were just right and not too hard, the fillings and the sauces were perfect. However there was one issue, we had both requested medium cooked to play it safe.. we usually opt for well done however we didn’t want to risk it being too tough as we had never visited this place before so didn’t know what their version of well done was. BUT the medium cook was too much on the rare side for us, it was too pink throughout and too soft to the point the burger meat just seemed to be falling apart rather than sticking together. It did slightly ruin the experience for us are we were looking forward to the burgers the most! Honestly everything else was perfect, but that did let us down. I didn’t want to complain, I hate sending food back but I was tempted just to give it a few more minutes on the grill!

We were however completely won over by the onion rings which were hands down the best onion rings we both had ever tried. The batter is so light, the rings had a perfect crunch and the onion inside was cooked to perfect. We started neglecting our chips and just concentrating on the onion rings. We were left fighting over the last ring which I obviously won! I know I was disappointed by the burgers, it didn’t live up to the hype that surrounded it but I may go back once more and ask for it to be cooked well done. I will let you know if I do, and write another review on here. As we both didn’t finish our main course completely, for once we had space left in our tummies for dessert. Red Iron only do two desserts, a Chocolate Brownie Sundae or a Toffee Fudge Brownie. I of course went for the chocolate option to share.

This was delicious. The chocolate sauce was what done it for me, it was real good chocolate sauce and none of that syrupy chocolate sauce that you can pick up at the supermarket. The brownie crumble pieces were just right and there was a lot of ice cream to get through. Considering this was under £5 I thought that it was quite a generous sized portion. Oh talking about pricing I do think the menu is priced really well. Altogether I believe the meal came to around £30, maybe just over, which I think is pretty decent. You’d be looking at paying around £15 each for a filling meal which is reasonable.

Overall I had a mixed experience at Red Iron Burgers, everything was going perfectly till we bit into our burgers but that was something that can we easily rectify the next time we go there as then we can specify that we do need it to be cooked quite well done rather than rare. Everything else was really good, the staff were very nice and lovely and I would visit again. I would’ve gone back already if I lived closer just to test my theory that if I ask for well done it would be cooked perfectly. It is a shame that it wasn’t up to our expectations this time round but unfortunately these things do happen every now and again. Hopefully next time we will be able to finish our burgers fully! I hope you liked this blog posts guys, I know it is different to the norm but I thought I’d test the waters and see how it goes down. I apologise if I wasn’t descriptive enough but it is my first attempt at food blogging, so bear with me. Until next time, have a good day :)

Red Iron Burgers is located at : 280 High Street, Uxbridge, UB8 ILQ.
