A couple of weeks ago I was contacted by Sure asking whether I wanted to take part in the Run to the Beat 10K run. I have never done a run before, the only distance I have ever been comfortable with in the past has been 100m and my stamina is absolutely rubbish. So what I do? I say yes of course, why not?! I had about 5 days to practise and get myself fit and before I knew it I was on my way to Wembley Park on the day of the race. I genuinely was not sure if I was going to be able to make it but I thought why not try, this could be a fun story to tell people one day.
I was planning on training for a few days, but the most I managed was a 4 mile walk. When I told my colleagues this at work, they said if you can walk 4 miles then you can do 6.2 miles (which is 10K) so that put an end to my determination to walk 6.2 as I got the ‘ah I can do it’ mentality. Notice my use of the word: walk? That’s because I knew there was no point in me thinking I could run, my plan was to brisk walk the whole length and as long as I made it to the finish line I was a champion.
The atmosphere at the race was electric, it was buzzing, lots of activity and people warming up everywhere. The music was pumping as it was music run (hence Run to the Beat), and there were a gorgeous set of twins called the Townsend Twins warming everybody up with their energetic warm up routines. I think being surrounded my so many runners made me realise actually I should try running some of it. And run I did…
…for about 5 minutes. I set off amazingly, I smiled for my sister as I ran past her and I kept up with the crowd. That was until my body decided to remind me that I was actually very unfit, I hadn’t done any training and it wasn’t going to keep going along with my head and pretend I could run. I had to accept walking very fast combined with jogging and spurts of running was going to be my go to method.
It was hard, it was really hard at times but every time I started slowing down and walking, there was always a runner who would encourage me and say ‘you can do this’. There was a point where there was a really pretty gorgeous girl who actually held my hand and ran along with me when she saw me slow down. Everyone was so encouraging, there were people out on the streets that clapped as we ran/jogged/walked past and there were music stations set up along the run to keep us motivated.
God knows how I did it, but I did it! I ran across the finish line, albeit slowly, and I finished with a time for 1 hour 24 minutes. Now that might sound so slow to some, but to me that was amazing. I thought I would take at least two hours if not more. I actually managed to cross the finish line, I was elated that I, me Tanzina, whose fitness level is null, actually completed a 10K run!
I have paid for the lack of preparation however, for three days straight I was waddling at work like I was pregnant. I felt the need to tell people why I was waddling, really it was an excuse to boast I ran 10K. Honestly it was such a great experience and I can’t thank Sure enough for letting me be a part of it. I was baffled by this, because if I was going to sweat profusely anywhere it was going to be there right under my arms right? Either way I was not complaining, my phone was fully functioning and I didn’t feel like a hot mess. If you wanted to take part in a run, my best advice is just do it. Maybe train a little bit more than me but do it. It’s definitely something to add to the bucket list. I am now going to attempt to train for 5K, where I will actually run and only walk a tiny amount. If I do end up managing that I will be sure to let you all know.
